The Lemonade Crime

Following the laws of our legal system, Evan and Jessie’s fourth grade class concocts a courtroom on the playground, putting Scott Spencer, alleged thief, on trial. They create a legitimate courtroom—with a judge, witnesses, a jury of their peers—and surprising consequences.

As she explores the difficulties of fairness, Jacqueline Davies once again reveals how good she is at understanding the complex emotions of children this age.

$208 is missing... did Scott take it,or are Jessie & Evan just mad because he seems to get away with everything?  Jessie is a year younger than everyone else in 4th grade so you think no one would listen to her...but they follow her into a makeshift courtroom to put Scott on trial.

This was a fun read.  3-4th graders will find it interesting to read about one of their own makes a playground into a courtroom.  I think perhaps the details of the courtroom maybe lost on them, but I noticed how much the author knew.

I will give it a 2 , it was good enough to consider, not remarkable literature, and may lose student interest with all the courtroom details.
