Nonfiction Reading...Online

The Common Core asks us to increase the amount of nonfiction our students read.  I just found a couple wonderful sites to help students read more nonfiction.  I think I will incorporate this into our daily 5 model under Read to Self. I think giving the students an opportunity to read these sites in class will not only give them more experience with nonfiction text, but increase their background knowledge.

The first is DOGO:

Our goal is to provide a fun, safe and interactive environment for children to read and learn about interesting current events. Our news articles are short, simple and include photos/videos in order to keep children focused and interested. We also augment our content with an integrated dictionary for challenging words and maps for geographical context.

News- Fun and inspiring current events and news from all around the world. With hundreds of archived articles and new original content added daily, there is always something new to learn.

Sites- a growing directory of fun and educational web sites for children. Each web site is carefully vetted before it makes our list. Sites is a great resource for teachers, parents and children.

Maps- news headlines geo-tagged on a World Map to provide younger readers an interactive way to read the headlines.

My First Blog Hop

This tale, I warn you is not for the weak of heart. The author will try to fool you, scare you, and just plain see how much you are willing to endure for a story.
